The country’s national currency, the Vietnamese Dong (VND) was originally introduced to replace the French Indochinese Piastre. in 1978,

During the unification of Vietnam, the currency of both the north and the south were merged.

The first 5,000 Dong note was issued during the 80’s.

Progressively higher denominations were issued in the subsequent years.

Currently, the highest dong denomination is VND500,000.
